A Metaphor for Curriculum & Consciousness

As I learned about ginkgo trees for writing this poem, I started to see a connection between the life cycle of the ginkgo tree and what Maxine Greene writes about consciousness in relation to curriculum: The ginkgo tree relies on an animal to eat its fruit and disperse the seed intact. As the seed travels through the animal’s intestines, its stomach acid scars the seed so it can germinate. This is akin to Greene’s assertion that consciousness requires disruption or a break from passivity. Withou...

To prepare to write my theory within, I followed William Pinar’s methodology for currere and started to write what I could recall about my educational experience as a learner—starting from preschool through the present. What emerged from these recollections were overarching qualities that I captured in a list poem. I originally thought to use the term “auto-verbs” to describe the list, meaning “verbs about the self,” but after some research, discovered the term “autonoetic,” attributed to the co...

In Complexity and Education, David and Sumara (2006) describe nested structures (or scale-free networks) as complex unities often composed of and often comprised of other unities that might be properly identified as complex—that is, as giving rise to new patterns of activities and new rules of behavior” (p. 5). The relationship between the poet and poem could be thought of as a nested structure, in which the poet is one complex unity, and the poem another. The poet is composed of other unities—m...
